Running your first 5k? Training to run a half marathon while raising funds to cure cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or some other horrible disease? I honor you. I am one of you. I want you to honor your body and what you are asking it to do. You are an athlete.
And I don’t care if you are a top ranked athlete or a charity runner, weekend warrior like me. You are still an athlete. You should fuel your body like an athlete. Whether it’s your first 5k or your 5th marathon, triathlon or century ride, how you fuel your body matters.
It’s much more difficult to be consistent with your workouts or training when you’re too sore from the hard work you have put in. I’ve struggled to walk up stairs, down stairs or sit down enough to know exactly what that feels like! The first 30 minutes after a workout is a critical window when you can use nutrients to help combat muscle soreness, speed muscle recovery, muscle growth and improve strength.
Exercise science has come a long way, and Beachbody has harnessed this science to create the Performance Line Recover Shake.
- Pomegranate Extract: Helps oxygen rich blood reach your muscles and increases blood flow. It has polyphenols and nitrates which could potentially mean better blood and nutrient delivery, and greater removal of metabolic byproducts from the muscle for enhanced recovery
- Time Released Protein: It’s widely known that having 20 grams of protein immediately after a workout is important for muscle recovery. It used to be believed that combining this with carbohydrates was necessary and science has shown that is no longer the case. So save the carbs for your pasta dinner or sweet potato binge and save your waist line too. You don’t need it in your Recover shake.
- Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA’s): Recovery uses an ideal 2:1:1 ratio of leucine, isoleucine, and valine, branch chain amino acids that are unique for their ability to help promote muscle synthesis and support rebuilding.
I’ve seen my own family members, (ahem, you know who you are) down a glass of Nestle Quick Chocolate Milk after a 10 mile training run. WHAT??? It’s pure sugar. That’s the first ingredient on the label! This is not the way to take care of and honor your body after what it just did for you! Ditch the chocolate milk already! That’s so 1970s! We know a bit more about nutrition these days!
